The Circling Eagle is a play that takes place in 1870 during the administration of President Grant at the time of the establishment of the great Lakota reservation near the Black Hills, where whites have recently discovered gold and are trying by all means to get the Indians out. The parents of the main character try to make life as easy as possible for their son, thinking that by sending him to a white school he will learn to "navigate" the contemporary world as easily as possible. They may or may not be right, the son will learn the ways of the white man, but his original Indian freedom and unbridledness is there. He has to behave, work, pray, and look the way his teachers and the nation in general tell him to, which he finds more and more repugnant. The young miser "gets" a white Christian name and is under constant pressure to conform absolutely to his surroundings. The circling eagle rebels, but eventually understands and, to all appearances, accepts the situation. After graduation, when he reaches the age of 25, he is to start working as a doctor in the typical capitalist way, which he hates with all his heart. He has travelled extensively as part of his education and has come to know white life and its often perverse values, and is now firmly convinced that it is unnatural and disgusting to live this way. In his mind he gave thanks for his education, which, despite all the vicissitudes, had enabled him to see the white state system through and through, and he resolved to show his fellow-tribesmen everything in its true light. He is determined to explain to everyone the true nature of the perverted religion that is constantly imposed on them by missionaries and the abominable nature of capitalism, which recognizes the value of life only in the power of money. The circling eagle decided to take his action long ago, so he studied geography in detail to keep track of where he was and where he wanted to go. As a privately trained doctor, he should have some freedom to travel, but what happens when he suddenly disappears? He's all too familiar with the US administration, which keeps an eye on everyone, so his escape will certainly not be without problems. Little does he know that he is being watched discreetly, yet sometimes he can't contain himself and rings out his opinions and desires. The long journey to freedom begins...
