What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system suitable for desktops, laptops and servers. It includes programs for all common computer activities - a web browser, software for creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations, an IM client, games and much more.

The new version of the popular operating system offers a fresh look, an accelerated (3D) environment, a Windows migration tool, easy codec installation, easier hardware management, and much more.

Ubuntu is and always will be free. You don't pay any fees, you don't fill out any license keys. You can legally download, use and share it with your friends, family, classmates or work colleagues.

Starting and installing Ubuntu:
Ubuntu is distributed as an ISO file, which is a CD image. See the How to burn an ISO page for instructions on burning a CD. Leave the burned CD in your CD/DVD drive and restart your computer. Right after rebooting, you should see a table with the option to boot Ubuntu (if it doesn't appear, read Booting from a CD). You don't have to worry about your current operating system, just try Ubuntu in peace, it won't touch your data.
