Karel is an excellent tool for a first introduction to the principles of programming. Generations of programmers have grown up with it.

Even the youngest children can start learning to program with Karl. They can learn to think logically and find the most elegant solutions to seemingly very complex problems. They will get used to correctly categorize and differentiate subtasks and look for similarities between them.

Charles is a robot enclosed in a city of 10x10 fields. In his world, there are only walls, markers, and four cardinal points. On his own, he can only take a step, turn left, and put down or pick up a marker. It can also detect whether there is a marker in the field where it is standing, whether it is facing a wall, and which side of the world it is facing.

Using the 4 commands LEFT, STEP, KEEP, WHEN, REPEAT, UNTIL, and recursive calls, you can teach Karl to perform even very complex actions.
