HelioBar is a magical utility that gives you back a piece of desktop stolen by the system tray. The system tray is a strip - usually at the bottom of the screen containing the Start buttons and so on. HelioBar renders the system tray as transparent, thus revealing the entire desktop including any wallpaper.

The program comes in two versions:

Freeware
XP

The main limitation of the freeware version is that you can only adjust the transparency in steps, not continuously as in the XP version. The disadvantage of the XP version is of course the price.
