The most notable change from the second game is the addition of a strategy mode with a globe map, where you'll give commands like in Total War or Europa Universalis - where to move your troops, where to fortify or what to do with survivors. If you build buildings in an area, the game will remember that and they'll stay there even when you return to the map later, for example when an enemy invades. Whatever you explore will be permanently accessible to your entire nation without having to gradually expand the technology tree in each epoch of humanity.
