When someone wants to develop 3D applications or games, they have two options when implementing graphics. Either create the graphics engine completely yourself, which is a completely unnecessary and time-consuming affair, or use an already created and time and community tested engine from another vendor. Ogre 3D is reasonable for its price (free) and is powerful enough. The proof can be seen in the few commercial games it powers.
