The program will rename specified files containing diacritics and forbidden characters to a valid URL name.
It requires .NET Framework 2.0 to run, which is included with Windows XP updates. Windows Vista and Windows 7 include .NET Framework 2.0.
Description of program features:
converts characters that contain diacritics
converts all characters to lowercase
replaces forbidden characters and spaces with either a hyphen - or the underscore _
removes unnecessary hyphens and underscores
if necessary, truncates the title to 255 characters in length
Example of renaming a file:
Entered by: c:filesBREAKING YELLOW HORSE THE DEVIL'S ODE.html
Result: c:filespriserne-zlutoucky-kun-upel-dabelske-ody.html
Installing the program:
the downloaded .ZIP file contains the rename_files folder, unzip it to the Program Files directory, or wherever you are used to, e.g. your desktop
the rename_files folder contains a file with the extension .EXE, which you can then run by double-clicking on its icon
Uninstall: Move the rename_files folder to the trash and that's it.
Instructions for use:
Batch Rename:
You will need Total Commander, if you don't have it download it from this server
open the folder where the files to be renamed are
if the files contain valuable data be sure to back them up
mark the files to be renamed, for example by briefly right-clicking on each file
from Total Commander's SELECT menu, choose COPY NAMES INCLUDING PATH TO THE BOX
switch to the program, click on the top editor, press Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+V
you should now see the full paths to the files to be renamed in the top editor
press the RENAME FILES button
check the result in Total Commander
in case of dissatisfaction, you can undo the operation by clicking the RETURN RENAME button
you can make any further name modifications in Total Commander to the selected files using the dialog opened by Ctrl+M
Edit text.
Enter the text you want to edit in the top editor - it can be multi-line
if you want to create a single line from the text, click (check) the JOIN LINES checkbox
press the EDIT TEXT button
the bottom editor should display the edited text
click on the COPY TEXT button and this will copy the text of the lower editor to the CLIPBOARD of your computer
then use the Ctr+V key combination to paste the text, for example, into a dialog box for renaming files or for other purposes
