ATHELAS is designed primarily for creating educational and test applications as well as simpler presentations. The control of the system is so simple that even novice users without programming knowledge can create applications according to their own ideas. Simpler applications can be created using only mouse clicks, there is no need to write any programming code. However, more experienced users can also program the system in a similar way to conventional programming languages to create complex and extensive applications.
