At the end of the holiday season, the main character Susan sets off on a journey home with her son Jimmy. Just before she leaves, however, she is interrupted by a phone call, during which she doesn't notice that her son has disappeared without a trace (after all, he's been playing next to her the whole time!) She couldn't hear the voices calling her son, as they were meant for him and him alone. But when she finally turned to look for him, she saw only his body drawn into a glowing portal opened in the trunk of an ancient tree. Without thinking, Susan made her way to the tree, but by then the portal (along with her son) had completely disappeared.
