VolID

Find out the serial number of the partition volume on which Windows is installed, create a backup, and change it.

Using VolID you can modify the serial number of your disk drive, also called Volume ID (not the physical hard drive serial number found on the back of the hard drive), the format of the volume ID is: XXXX-XXXX (X maybe 0,1 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, A, B, C, D, E, F).

Before modifying the volume ID, quit all running programs, a restart is required for the change to take effect. Press the ?Restore? button to revert the drive volume ID to the old one.

The conclusion is that there is no real reason to change the volume ID because it is not the letter that appears in the This Computer section. The practicality of VolID becomes very questionable because it wants to improve an old security method that may put your computer at even greater risk.
