U73b Compressor

A faithful emulation of the German U73b broadcast compressor.

This device was often used in mastering in the 60s-80s. It is a vary-mu tube compressor/limiter with adjustable release parameter. Audified created the circuits exactly as they were originally designed. The plug-in also adds input and output gain to make the compressor easier to adjust. The plug-in has also been equipped with a VU meter.

The U73b is unmatched in mastering, mixing drums, bass, vocals and commentary. The user presets for it were created by Boris Carloff.

While the compressor is very easy to set up, the effect of this unique device is apparent as soon as you turn it on:

Compressor limiter switch: the upper potentiometer U73b switches between compression (Kompr), bypass (Durchshalt) and limiter (Begr) modes. Compressor mode has a lower threshold and a very gently increasing compression ratio. In contrast, the limiter mode has a higher threshold with a higher compression ratio, but still a very subtle ?knee? parameter.

Release time: The second switch offers a ?release? time setting.

IN: Adjusts the input gain before the compressor/limiter circuit
OUT: Adjusts the output gain after the compressor/limiter circuit
Sidechain: Selects the source of the signal used to control the gain reduction
