What is a meta-information system?
Due to the ever-increasing amount of data, we need to organize metadata records in a suitable way and make them accessible to as many people as possible. Metainformation systems serve this purpose. By metainformation system we mean an information system that works with metadata. Its purpose is to provide up-to-date and credible data and information about data, whether at the level of individual data elements (items), data units (sets) or their sources, managers, etc.

What is a meta-information system good for?
The existence of a meta-information system in a GIS organization is very important (as well as in other fields that process digital data). However, the need for knowledge about digital data of this kind (geodata), their specific characteristics and properties, the conditions of their acquisition, etc. is universal. It is necessary to know not only what data are available in a particular area, but also whether they are suitable for a particular type of application. Information about their content, structure and quality is therefore essential.

ISO 19115 Metadata Standard
The purpose of ISO 19115, is to provide a structure for describing digital geographic data. It defines metadata elements, provides a schema and establishes a general set of metadata terminology, definitions, extensions and procedures. It also provides information on the identification, extent, quality, spatial and temporal schema, spatial reference and distribution of digital geographic data.
