Inbox Notifier

As you probably already know, you can only get Google email notifications if you're using Chrome, Firefox, or Safari and have Gmail open in your browser. That is, of course, unless you're using a dedicated third-party app.

Inbox Notifier is an open source program that runs on the system tray and displays notifications on your desktop whenever you receive new Gmail messages. This allows you to easily check your inbox and even makes it easier to write new messages.

In addition to providing notifications, the app also lets you know how many unread messages are currently in your inbox. If you tap the icon on the taskbar, it opens your email account page in your default browser.
